Thesis procedure in accordance with the new Thesis Regulation of the Charité

Guidelines for opening a thesis procedure for PhD or MD/PhD or Dr. PH in the form of a monograph

1. The Thesis Regulation of the Medical Faculty of the CharitéUniversitätsmedizin Berlin dated 2012-12-03 is the legal basis. You can download the regulation from the right column.

2. The application for opening a thesis procedure shall be submitted in writing to the Chairperson of the Thesis Commission. In the right column, you will also find suggestions for structuring the layout.

3. Your personal presence is required for the opening.

4. The application for admission to the thesis procedure must be submitted before starting the work. You can find relevant information in Section 5 (2) of the Thesis Regulation and here.

The following documents shall also be appended to the application:

(a) 3 copies with an obligatory title sheet

The three bound copies of the dissertation in A4 format drawn up at the candidate’s expense shall be written in English. In the right column, you will find a binding template for the layout of the cover sheet specified by the Faculty. The title of the dissertation must be brief and readily understandable. Abbreviations should be avoided. Rules of the German language shall be complied with. In the case of studies involving animal experiments, indicate the file reference and date of the official permit for the animal experiments.

Advice: Please note that German language dissertations need an English language abstract and vice versa.

(b) Certificate/ diploma certificate/ Master’s certificate

You can submit either a certified transcript of your college graduation certificate or an uncertified photocopy thereof; in the latter case, the original document shall also be produced for verification purposes.

(c) Curriculum vitae

Please submit a separate CV signed by you for the archive. The CV should contain information on courses, employment, academic degrees obtained and earlier efforts to obtain a doctorate. Courses taken and academic degrees obtained must be substantiated with certificates.

Important: The signed CV is part of the bound dissertation and shall be appended to it at the end of the work.

(d) List of publications

Please submit a separate list of publications (if applicable) for the archive.

(e) Affidavit

A legally binding declaration stating that the thesis  has been written by yourself autonomously,  without the undeclared help of third parties and without the use of undeclared references or means ....

The declaration is bonded to the end of the thesis. You sign this declaration.  A second personally signed copy of the declaration is submitted to the thesis commission separately. If publications are present, your scientific supervisor also signs.

(f) Abstract

A separate, unbound copy each of the dissertation abstract in German and English indicating the title of the dissertation and the name of the candidate for the archive. 

(g) Certificate of good conduct

A certificate of good conduct from the police (may not be older than eight weeks on the date of submission).

(h) Form for proposed reviewers

A form for five proposed reviewers stamped and signed and stamped by the candidate’s supervisor. You can download the requisite form from the right column.

(i) Primary data set

Based on the Standing Rules on Good Scientific Practice, the Thesis Commission is encouraged to carry out random sample checks. For this purpose, a faithful copy of the primary data set of the underlying dissertations in digital form (DVD, CD or memory stick) or the exact postal or electronic address with the name(s) of the responsible person or persons where the data can be accessed over a period of ten years is to be provided or named.

(j) ID card / passport

When submitting the application, the candidate must be able to prove his/her identity by producing a valid personal identification document.
