Thesis procedure in accordance with the Thesis Regulation of the Charité

Guidelines for opening a doctoral procedure in the form of a publication doctorate (with one first authorship in a top journal)

1. The Thesis Regulation of the Medical Faculty of the CharitéUniversitätsmedizin Berlin dated 2012-12-03 is the legal basis. You can download the Regulation from the right column.

2. The application for opening the thesis procedure shall be submitted in writing to the Chairperson of the Thesis Commission. In the right column, you will find suggestions for structuring the layout.

3. You must be present in person for the opening.

The following documents shall also be appended to the application:

(a) Three copies with a binding title sheet

Three bound copies of the dissertation in a DIN A4 format must be prepared at the candidate’s own expense.

In the right column, you will find a binding sample of the cover sheet approved by the Faculty.

The dissertation should be arranged as follows:

- Cover sheet
- Table of contents
- Abstract (a maximum of 400 words, in German and English each)
- Detailed declaration of own work/ affidavit (with your signature)
- Excerpt of the Journal Summary List (ISI Web of KnowledgeSM)
- Print copies of the selected publication
- Curriculum vitae (with your signature)
- Complete list of publications
- Acknowledgements

(b) Curriculum vitae

Please submit separately a CV signed by you for the archive. The CV should contain information on courses, employment record, academic degrees obtained and previous efforts to obtain a doctorate. Courses taken and academic degrees obtained must be substantiated with certificates.

(c) Certificate/diploma/Master’s certificate

You can submit either a certified copy of the university certificate or of diploma or of the certificate of master or of the certificate of examination in medicine/dentistry; alternatively you can submit an uncertified photocopy, in which case the original document is to be presented for verification.

Physicians shall also submit their licence and (if applicable) their specialist certificate.

Candidates enrolled in medical or dental courses at the Charité shall present a current matriculation certificate.

(d) List of publications

A separate, complete list of publications shall be submitted for the archive.

Please note that this list must also be included following the CV in the bound copies of your dissertation.

(e) Affidavit

Also part of the work is a declaration signed by the candidate stating that the dissertation was written by himself/herself without the help of (unauthorised) third parties, that neither the work nor parts thereof are copies of other works and that all aids and literature used are listed in their entirety.  The candidate’s contribution to the selected publications is also stated.
The declaration shall be inserted at the end of the bound dissertation.

(f) Excerpt from the Journal Summary List (ISI Web of KnowledgeSM)

Please hand in the exerpt from the Journal Summary List (ISI Web of KnowledgeSM). The exerpt must document without doubt, that the journal is a "Top Journal". To prove this, have all journals of your specialty sorted by impact factor. Check the upper 30% of the journals for their eigen factor. It must be equal to or higher than 0.01 to qualify for a "Top Journal". 

(g) Print copy of the publication

A peer-reviewed original publication written by a sole first author is submitted as a written doctoral thesis to a professional journal of medicine/ health sciences that is a leading journal in this field (a list is to be provided).

 The Thesis Commission shall decide on the recognition of co-authored publications that have already been used in another doctoral procedure.

The publications must be representations of research works and their results written as an independent scientific endeavour whose objective is progress in scientific knowledge. The scientific work on which the publications are based must have been carried out at, or in cooperation with, the Medizinische Fakultät Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

The year of publication of the most recent publication may not be more than one year before the opening of the doctoral procedure. The Thesis Commission shall decide on exceptions.

(h) Abstract

A separate copy of the abstract of your work  in German and English, that is not covered by the journal copyright or the original abstract if there are no legal objections.   

(i) Reviewer suggestion list

A form with five reviewer proposals stamped and signed by the candidate’s supervisor. You can download the requisite form from the right column.

(j) Certificate of good conduct

A certificate of good conduct from the police (may not be older than eight weeks on the date of submission).

(k) Primary data set

Based on the Standing Rules on Good Scientific Practice, the Thesis Commission is encouraged to carry out random sample checks. For this purpose, a faithful copy of the primary data set of the underlying dissertations in digital form (DVD, CD or memory stick) or the exact postal or electronic address with the name(s) of the responsible person or persons where the data can be accessed over a period of ten years is to be provided or named.

(l) Participation confirmation course „Good Scientific Practice“

In Section 1 (2), the statute of Medizinische Fakultät CharitéUniversitätsmedizin Berlin on „Good Scientific Practice“ specifies that it is obligatory for doctoral candidates to take a course in Good Scientific Practice. The content of the course is focused on experiment planning, evaluation of primary data, statistics and authorships.

(m) ID card / passport

When submitting the application, the candidate must be able to prove his/her identity by producing a valid personal identification document.
