Registration and enrolment

You are here:

The first step on the path to your doctoral degree is the registration of your doctoral project at the Office for Doctoral Studies.

You can also send the documents for your registration to the Doctoral Studies by post. A personal appointment is not necessary. If you would like to submit your Doctoral Studies including attachments in person, please make an appointment via email first. The submission of documents without an appointment is not possible. Please allow three to four months for processing in the doctoral office.

Please be aware that after registering your doctoral project, you must also register as a doctoral student, unless you are already enrolled for medicine or dentistry at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin or are employed at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. For your enrollment, please turn to the admission office. Further information on this is available on the online portal of the Charité

You must submit your enrolment certificate when you initiate the doctoral examination procedure.

In general, all doctoral projects must be registered prior to beginning work on them: Which documents you need to submit depends on the type of doctoral degree you wish to pursue.

Certificates obtained abroad

The equivalence of certificates obtained abroad to a German university degree must be first verified by the Central Office for Foreign Education in Bonn. A corresponding confirmation must be enclosed.

Registration for a Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent. degree

When registering for a Dr. med. or Dr. med. dent. degree, you must submit the following documents:

Documents

  • Fully completed Doctorate Agreement and
  • Copy of the certificate from the licensing examination in medicine or dentistry

or

  • Confirmation of enrolment in the medicine or dentistry degree programme at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

Registration for a Dr. rer. medic. degree

When registering for a Dr. rer. medic. degree, you must submit the following documents:

Documents

either

  • Certificate attesting the completion of a non-medical degree programme with a Master's degree or equivalent in a programme relevant to the topic of the doctorate and a Bachelor's degree certificate (or equivalent), obtained in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate

or

  • Certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree with ECTS grade A in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate and the commencement of a Master's degree programme

or

  • Certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate with the ECTS grade A and the confirmation of an Aptitude Assessment Test conducted at the Faculty of Medicine of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

Registration for a PhD oder MD/PhD degree within the scope of a doctoral programme / graduate school

When registering for a PhD or MD/PhD degree pursued within the scope of a doctoral program or another structured program, a graduate school for instance, you must submit the following documents:

and either

  • Certificate attesting the completion of a degree programme in medicine or dentistry 

or

  • Certificate attesting the completion of a degree programme with a Master's degree or equivalent in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate and a certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate 

or

  • Certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree with ECTS grade A in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate and the commencement of a Master's degree programme

or

  • Certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate with the ECTS grade A and the confirmation of an Aptitude Assessment Test conducted at the Faculty of Medicine of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

and in each case

• Admission to the relevant doctoral degree course or programme 

Please note:

If additional information on the admission requirements of the relevant doctoral degree course or structured programme is required, please enquire with the relevant body.

Registration for a PhD or MD/PhD degree outside the scope of a doctoral programme / graduate school

When registering for a PhD or MD/PhD degree not pursued within the scope of a doctoral programme or another structured programme, the Doctoral Committee will conduct a selection procedure. Specific information on application deadlines and numbers of candidates admitted are available at PhD and MD/PhD selection procedure.

In these cases, you must submit the following certificates and documents:

and either

  • Certificate attesting the completion of a degree programme in medicine or dentistry (after semester 6, students of medicine or dentistry at the Charité may register a doctoral project for obtaining a PhD or MD/PhD degree in duly substantiated exceptional cases)

or

  • Certificate attesting the completion of a degree programme with a Master's degree or equivalent in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate and a certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate

or

  • Certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree with ECTS grade A in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate and the commencement of a Master's degree programme

or

  • Certificate attesting a Bachelor's degree in a subject relevant to the topic of the doctorate with the ECTS grade A and the confirmation of an Aptitude Assessment Test conducted at the Faculty of Medicine of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin

and in each case

  • An exposé including course schedule, timetable, project plan and declaration regarding financing of the doctoral project. The project plan must provide a detailed description of your research project. Please prepare your course schedule together with your supervisors and outline the courses (equivalent to 30 ECTS credit points) you want to complete. Additional notes on this are available in the Curriculum of the doctoral environment. The exposé must be signed by you and your supervisors

Please note:

For a MD/PhD degree, you can also apply or register for with Master's or Bachelor's degree plus Aptitude Assessment Test.

An essential condition for the award of a MD/PhD degree is, however, that you have completed a degree programme in medicine or dentistry. In concrete terms, this means: You will only be awarded the MD/PhD degree certificate after you have submitted your certificate from the licensing examination in medicine or dentistry.

Registration for a protected monograph for a Dr. med., Dr. med. dent. or Dr. rer. medic. degree

For a Dr. med., Dr. med. dent. or Dr. rer. medic. degree, you can submit a temporarily protected monograph, if this has been approved by the Doctoral Commission prior to the start of the doctoral project.

You must enclose the following documents with your application for approval:

  • Detailed research, time and publication plan in accordance with the guidelines of the Doctoral Commission and which is also signed by the principal supervisor
  • Detailed CV – with a list of publications, where applicable
  • Informal informative application as substantiation and for the duration of the protection period together with relevant documents from the developing institution. The application must object to a public examination in accordance with Section 32 (7) of the Berlin University Regulations (BerlHG)

Registration for a monograph or a protected monograph for a PhD or MD/PhD degree

For a PhD or MD/PhD degree, you can submit a monograph or a temporarily protected monograph, if this has been approved by the Examination Board prior to the start of the doctoral project. 

You must enclose the following documents with your application for approval:

  • Detailed research, time and publication plan in accordance with the guidelines of the Doctoral Commission and which is also signed by the principal supervisor
  • Detailed CV – with a list of publications, where applicable
  • An informal informative application as substantiation and for the duration of the protection period together with relevant documents from the developing institution. The application must object to a public examination in accordance with Section 32 (7) of the Berlin University Regulations (BerlHG)
