You are here:
To register your doctoral project, you must complete a Doctorate Agreement (see Links & Downloads or below) with a supervising university professor or lecturer
- of Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin,
- of MDC,
- of the parent universities Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) and Freie Universität Berlin (FU), or
- other associated institutions
as well as with a least one co-supervisor (see below).
In addition, the Doctorate Agreement must specify
- the topic,
- the problem,
- the working title or
- at least the essential hypotheses of your doctoral project.
For a Dr. med., Dr. med. dent. or Dr. rer. medic. degree, two supervisors are compulsory - the involvement of a third supervisor should be considered.
For a PhD or MD/PhD degree, three supervisors are compulsory.
Consultation on the application of qualitative methodology
You are planning a doctoral project that includes a relevant part of qualitative methodology and want to do a doctorate by means of a monograph?
If so, you must submit a certificate with your application for the opening of the doctoral procedure stating that the applied qualitative methodology and its implementation are not objectionable. The certificate must be issued by an expert in qualitative methods accredited by the Doctoral Commission.
Alternatively, you can also submit proof that you have taken advantage of a consultation on the application of qualitative methods before carrying out your research project. This proof must also be issued by an expert for qualitative methods accredited by the PhD Commission.
We recommend that you contact the Network for Qualitative Research at the Charité in good time, i.e., soon after registering your doctoral project.
Accredited qualitative research methodology experts
Alternatively, the following experts in qualitative research methodology are accredited by the Doctoral Commission. These are authorised to issue the required confirmation. Please bring along the Doctorate Agreement approved by the Doctoral Committee to your appointment with the espert.

Consulting by the Institute of Biometry
Are you planning a doctoral project with a relevant statistical section and wish to pursue your doctoral degree by submitting a monograph?
Then you must submit a confirmation issued by a statistician accredited by the Doctoral Commission, together with your application for initiation of the doctoral examination procedure, attesting that the method and scope of the statistical processing is sufficient (cf. Section 8 (2)a PO 2017).
We recommend that you contact the Biometry Service Unit of the Institute of Biometry and Clinical Epidemiology (iBikE) in good time, i.e. soon after the registration of your doctoral project.
If you use the consulting services of the Service Unit - this service is free for you - to accompany your research project, iBikE will provide you with the relevant confirmation upon request: For this, please make a consultation appointment online via the homepage of the institute. Make sure to register for an appointment in good time, as the availability of appointments is based on current demand.
Ideally, we recommend you make an appointment for a consultation at the start of your doctoral project, i.e. in the planning phase, and a further appointment in the implementation or evaluation phase. Please also bring along a copy of your Doctorate Agreement approved by the Office for Doctoral Studies to the first appointment.
The contents of the consultation will be documented. After completing the consultation, the consultant of the Biometry Service Unit will present you with a confirmation on the completion of an accompanying statistical consultation. You must then enclose this confirmation with your documents when you file an application for initiation of your doctoral project.
Are you planning a doctoral project involving the submission of a monograph which does not include a relevant statistical section, as is for example the case in a project based purely in the humanities? In this case, note this at a suitable place in your Doctorate Agreement. In this event, you will be exempted from the obligation to submit a confirmation in accordance with Section 8 (2)a PO 2017.
Do you plan to pursue your doctoral degree by submitting publications (doctorate by publication)? Then, in general, the obligation to submit a confirmation in accordance with Section 8 (2)a PO 2017 does not apply to you. A statistical consultation is nevertheless recommended.
Accredited statisticians
Alternatively, the following statisticians are accredited by the Doctoral Commission. These are authorised to issue the required confirmation. Please bring along the Doctorate Agreement approved by the Doctoral Committee to your appointment with the statistician.
