Examination procedures and deadlines for submissions under the 2012 Doctoral Degree Regulations

You are here:

The final deadline for submitting your thesis and for initiating the official examination procedure under the 2012 Doctoral Degree Regulations is Thursday, 31 October 2020. Please note the following:

You registered before 1 November 2017?

Your thesis and your request to initiate the formal examination procedure must have been submitted to the Office for Doctoral Studies by 31 October 2020. Please note that the submission must be done in person. Please contact us by email or telephone to make an appointment

To prevent the serious consequences associated with late submission, the following rule shall apply: Provided you have contacted the Office for Doctoral Studies and successfully made an appointment by 1 October 2020, your submission will be treated as having been made on time. This will apply even if your appointment with the Office of Doctoral Studies was scheduled for after 31 October 2020 (for instance during November or December, but preferably no later than 31 January 2021). When contacting us regarding an appointment, please let us know if there are any special circumstances of which we need to be aware, such as a stay abroad or work commitments.

Please also be advised that, for reasons of fairness, we will never book appointments far in advance. Requests such as ‘I am planning to submit in six months’ or similar will not be accepted.

You registered during the transition period, i.e. between 1 November 2017 and 30 April 2018, but under the old system (2012 Doctoral Degree Regulations)?

A personal submission deadline applies. This can be calculated as follows: Day of registration (please refer to your ‘Promotionsvereinbarung/Doctoral Studies Agreement’) plus 3 years.

Example: You registered on 1 December 2017. Your personal submission deadline is 30 November 2020. If this is e. g. a Saturday, Sunday or holiday, the actual submission deadline shall be the last working day before this date on which the Office for Doctoral Studies is open.

Please ensure that you contact the office at least four calendar weeks before this date, either by email or by telephone, to make an appointment for your submission visit. Your submission will then be treated as having been made on time. This will apply even if the actual submission date – your appointment at the Office for Doctoral Studies – was scheduled for after your personal submission deadline.
